Similarities Between Cybersecurity & Data Science
Both fields have similar educational requirements in terms of high school level courses such as biology, chemistry, physics, math (usually algebra), computer programming languages (preferably Java), and computer sciences courses such as database management systems or operating systems. These fields require additional certifications to practice in the field professionally. Both fields have similar earning potentials. They require working with other professionals to apply their unique skill sets. Both fields have a great deal of demand for skilled professionals right now. The demand for cybersecurity professionals has been increasing rapidly over the last ten years, especially since the WannaCry ransomware attack shut down an entire country. The demand for data science professionals has been increasing rapidly over the last five years, especially since the number of smartphones has increased at an exponential rate.
The Differences Between Cybersecurity & Big Data Analytics
The biggest difference between cybersecurity and big data analytics is that big data analytics is more hands-off. Data scientists will use programming languages to write algorithms or programs that will perform specific tasks. These programs are designed to analyze large amounts of raw data and find patterns or trends or insights that could be used to improve efficiency or predict future outcomes.
The cybersecurity professional will also use programming languages to design software applications, but the purpose of this software application is to thwart cyber attacks. This software application must be able to detect attacks as soon as possible, and it must be able to apply patches or fixes to prevent damage from occurring.
